Road Trip Tips

Traveling to a televised food location is great and recommend if you have the time. A short day trip of traveling and dining is a great adventure, well worth the time and a thrill. If you decide to take a Diners, Drive in and Dives road trip, follow these tips to help on your adventure:
  1. bring cash and coins to cover meals, parking meters and highway tolls (where applicable), some places take ONLY CASH
  2. allow enough time for bad weather and construction
  3. dress appropriately for weather changes AND the restaurant
  4. make sure to get a full tank of gas beforehand
  5. use a GPS (recommended) or bring a map/printout
  6. do not overeat at the first destination if going to more than one
  7. CALL AHEAD and/or check the restaurant's website.  Sometimes these locations close or change hours.
  8. Ask about the wait times. 30 minutes plus is not uncommon
  9. bring a camera w/good batteries.  Share some photos here for others.
  10. if your going to eat "What Guy ate" review a video or check one of the episode reviews.  Sometimes the "Guy ate this" list is not posted.
  11. decide before hand: your budget and if you will share plates
  12. a group of up to four is safe, more than that, be prepared to either wait a lot longer or sit at different tables
  13. understand that the restaurant will most likely be much busier than before their segment aired.  This is known as the "before" and the "after" effect.
  14. most of these restaurants are not a gourmet experience, don't be an ass, it ruins it for everyone else
  15. if you are bringing a baby and it starts crying, for gods sake take it outside or to the restroom and calm it down, other guests may have traveled a long distance to come there, don't spoil it
  16. different states have different social values when it comes to dinning, look around the joint
  17. Tipping: try this scale, nothing less than 10%, 15% for average, 18% for a large crowd, 20% for really great service.  If your food was bad, tell the staff/owner don't punish the wait staff.
